Best Mattress for Side Sleepers
What mattress type is best for side sleepers? That depends on your preferences and body but there are a few rough guidelines to start you off.
1. Softer for Side Sleepers
Side sleepers need pressure relief for their shoulders and hips. That's why a softer mattress is recommended to anyone who sleeps on their side a lot. With more foam for your shoulders to sink into, you'll get better spinal alignment and less pain on your pressure points.
2. Size Matters
If you're a small person, you can go pretty soft with your mattress choice. Something between 7 and 10 on our comfort scale will be excellent for you, since you don't sink down very far into a mattress - you won't get back pain like heavier people might on a super soft mattress.
Heavier side sleepers will want to consider something in the medium to soft range. When you are heavier, you sink further into the mattress so you need good support to keep your hips from sinking too far, causing bad spinal alignment. Too soft of a mattress will cause back pain, while too firm of a mattress will cause shoulder pain. Find something in the middle range that feels comfortable yet supportive.
3. Any Style
Any mattress style - innerspring, memory foam, or hybrid - can work well for a side sleeper. As long as it feels right to you and is the right comfort, it should be fine.
Think about your other needs when determining style. If you need to dampen motion transfer because your partner is a light sleeper, a memory foam bed may be the way to go. If you like a more responsive feel so you can easily change positions, try an innerspring.
